Education is Knowledge

These days, a college degree should be viewed as more than a pathway to employment, especially for Black students and professionals navigating systems where education alone has never guaranteed equal access, opportunity, or economic mobility.

Don’t pursue education simply to get a job. Pursue education to gain knowledge, access, credibility, relationships, and leverage.

Use your education to develop expertise in something that matters. Use it to understand industries, identify opportunities, solve problems, and build relationships with people who can become partners, collaborators, investors, mentors, and clients.

Use your education to create, not just compete. Create businesses. Create intellectual property. Create partnerships. Create multiple streams of income. Create assets that have the potential to build generational wealth rather than simply generational employment.

And if your degree opens the door to an organization, walk through that door with intention. Learn how the organization works. Understand where decisions are made, how resources are allocated, and where opportunities exist to innovate. Don't simply ask, “How do I succeed within this organization?” Ask, “What can I learn, influence, build, and ultimately transform while I'm here?” A degree can help you get into the room.

But knowledge, strategy, relationships, ownership, and entrepreneurship can help you change the room, and eventually build rooms of your own. The goal of higher education should not simply be employment.

Learn. Leverage. Build. Own. Transform.
