How to Stop Waiting for Permission

How many times have you put your dreams on hold because you were waiting for someone else
to say, "You're ready"?
Perhaps you've been waiting for your manager to recognize your leadership potential. Maybe
you've been waiting for a mentor to tell you it's time to start your business, write your book, or
apply for that executive position. Or perhaps you've been waiting for life to become less
complicated before pursuing the goals that have been quietly calling your name.
The truth is, many of us spend years waiting for permission that was never ours to receive. We
wait for approval, for confidence, until we have another degree, another certification, or more
experience. We wait until the timing feels perfect or until our fears disappear.
Unfortunately, while we're waiting, opportunities pass us by. The most successful people I have
met throughout my career didn't reach their goals because someone gave them permission. They
reached them because they made a decision to move forward despite uncertainty. They
understood that confidence is rarely the starting point, it is the result of taking courageous action.Where Does the Need for Permission Come From?
From an early age, many of us are taught to seek approval before acting. We ask permission to
speak, to try something new, and unfortunately to make mistakes. Although structure serves an
important purpose, over time many adults unconsciously continue this pattern. We begin looking
outside ourselves for validation before making decisions about our own lives. We become
concerned about what others will think.
Will they approve?
Will they understand?
Will they believe I'm qualified?
While seeking wise counsel is valuable, allowing other people's opinions to determine your
future can quietly limit your potential.
Permission Is an Inside Job
One of the most important lessons I've learned throughout my career is this, no one knows your
purpose better than you. No one fully understands your dreams, your experiences, your gifts, or
the calling placed on your life.
Others may encourage you, may mentor you, and may open doors but no one can decide to walk
through those doors except you. Waiting for external validation often delays the very growth you
are seeking. The permission you've been waiting for has been within you all along.
Fear Often Wears the Mask of Waiting
Sometimes we tell ourselves we're "waiting for the right time.” In reality, we're often waiting
because we're afraid. What are we afraid? Fear of failure, rejection, criticism, disappointing
others, and often of success. Fear has a remarkable way of disguising itself as preparation.
We convince ourselves that we need one more thing, a course, certification, or opportunity. While
preparation is important, there comes a point when additional preparation becomes
procrastination. Growth begins the moment action replaces hesitation.
Courage Comes Before Confidence
One of the biggest myths about successful people is that they were confident before they began.
Most were not. They simply chose courage. Confidence isn't something you magically receive
before taking action. Confidence is built through action. Every presentation you give strengthens
your voice. Every interview builds your experience. Every difficult conversation develops your
leadership. Every challenge teaches resilience. The only way to become confident is to continue doing the very things that once made you
uncomfortable.
Stop Asking "Am I Ready?"
Instead, ask better questions.
Rather than asking:
"Am I ready?"
Ask:
"What can I learn by taking the next step?"
Instead of asking:
"What if I fail?"
Ask:
"What if I succeed beyond what I can currently imagine?"
Instead of focusing on perfection, focus on progress. Small, consistent action always outperforms
endless preparation.
Five Ways to Stop Waiting for Permission
1. Define Your Own Success
Don't allow society, family, or coworkers to determine what success should look like for you.
Identify your own values and create goals that align with your purpose.
2. Trust Your Experience
You likely know more than you give yourself credit for. Every job, challenge, and life experience
has equipped you with valuable knowledge and transferable skills.
3. Take Imperfect Action
There will never be a perfect time to pursue your goals. Start before you feel completely ready.
Progress is always more valuable than perfection.
4. Surround Yourself with Growth-Minded PeopleChoose relationships that encourage possibility instead of reinforcing fear. Positive environments
help strengthen confidence and resilience.
5. Give Yourself Permission Today
Write it down if you need to.
"I give myself permission to grow."
"I give myself permission to lead."
"I give myself permission to dream bigger."
"I give myself permission to begin."
Those words may seem simple, but they have the power to change the trajectory of your life.
A Personal Reflection
Throughout my own journey, I have learned that some of the greatest opportunities in my career
began when I stopped waiting for someone else to affirm what I already knew in my heart. There
were moments when the path ahead wasn't clear. Moments when I questioned whether I had
enough experience. Moments when stepping forward required faith more than certainty.
Yet each time I chose action over fear, I discovered something important: the next level of
growth was never waiting on someone else's approval. It was waiting on my willingness to
believe that I was capable of becoming more.
That lesson has shaped my career as an executive, educator, entrepreneur, and author. It
continues to remind me that resilience is not simply recovering from setbacks, it is having the
courage to move forward even when the outcome is uncertain.
Reflection Questions
Take a few moments to reflect on these questions:
• What dream have I been postponing while waiting for someone else's approval?
• What fear is really keeping me from taking action?
• Where in my life have I already demonstrated courage?
• What is one opportunity I can create for myself this month?
• If I truly believed in my potential, what would I do differently starting today?Final Thoughts
You don't need permission to pursue your purpose. You don't need permission to learn something
new. You don't need permission to become a leader. You don't need permission to reinvent your
career. Your future belongs to the person willing to take responsibility for creating it.
- Stop waiting.
- Start believing.
- Start building.
- Start leading.
Because every meaningful journey begins with one courageous decision: To give yourself
permission. Remember, no one else can authorize the life you were created to live. That
permission has always belonged to you.
